Slain officer s services at NCC on Tuesday

Funeral services have been set for fallen Freemansburg officer Robert Allen Lasso.Lasso, 31, was shot and killed Thursday while responding to a disturbance call. George Hitcho Jr., 46, of the 400 block of New Street in the borough, has been charged with homicide in his death and was sent to Northampton County Prison without bail.
The services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Spartan Center at Northampton Community College, 3835 Green Pond Road in Bethlehem Township.Arrangements are being handled by state and local police. Mourners are urged to arrive well in advance."Law enforcement officers will begin arriving at 9 a.m. and will access parking via Green Pond Road," college spokeswoman Heidi Butler said in an email. "Other guests should use the Oakland Road entrance."There will be no public viewing or burial, according to a director at the Long Funeral Home.A recorded message at Long Funeral Home says "The Lasso family appreciates your understanding and asks that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time."Lasso leaves behind his wife of nearly eight years, Jennifer, and their 7-year-old daughter, Rose, and 4-year-old son, Frankie.Lasso graduated from Freedom High School in 1999 and was an officer of the Freemansburg Police Department for nine years.In lieu of flowers, the family is asking contributions to be made to the Lasso Scholarship Fund through Sovereign Bank at 65 East Elizabeth Ave. in Bethlehem or the Lasso Memorial Fund through Heights Community Federal Credit Union at 3530 Freemansburg Ave. in Bethlehem.This is not the first time the city of Bethlehem will be hosting a funeral service for a fallen officer.In December 2009, the city and about 1,000 mourners paid tribute to Sgt. Mark Renninger, who was killed in Lakewood, Wash.Renninger, 39, a Bethlehem native and Liberty High School graduate, was killed along with three other officers as they sat in a coffee shop preparing for their shift.The man who killed the officers, ex-convict Maurice Clemmons, was killed two days later by a Seattle police officer.
