Part time students flock to NCC

Post on: 2011-08-26 By: admin

Northampton Community College's fall enrollment numbers are up slightly this year, but the makeup of its student body is quite different. For the second time in its history, the college last fall enrolled more full-time students than part-time students. This year the number of full-time students dropped by 5 percent but part-time enrollment is up 6.5 percent.
Overall, enrollment is up four students over last year at 10,903 students, said Mardi McGuire-Closson, vice president of student affairs and dean of students. Enrollment figures are expected to rise. The college announced the early enrollment figures after college President Arthur Scott's final state of the college speech. He plans to retire by the end of the school year."I wasn't letting Dr. Scott out of here with enrollment down," McGuire-Closson joked. "Even if I had to register myself."Northampton's enrollment changes mirror trends seen across the state, according to Jamie Yates, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges.McGuire-Closson said it's theorized that the drop in full-time students may mean the economy's improving, because full-time enrollment spikes in downturns. The health care reform act may have enabled some working students who enrolled full-time in order to stay on their parents' insurance to switch to part-time student status, McGuire-Closson said.Yates was cautious to attribute the enrollment trends to the economy or the health care reform act before looking at student demographics when fall classes start.
