Nigeria Poor Services in South East NCC Meets Telecoms Operators
Post on: 2011-08-26 By: admin
Enugu — Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) at the weekend met with telecoms operators in Enugu to address quality of services, with emphasis on the level of service deterioration in the South East.
The event attracted representatives from various telecommunications operators including MTN, Glo, Etisalat, and Airtel.
Addressing the participants, Executive Commissioner, Stakeholders Management, Mr. Okechukwu Itanyi, said in the telecommunications industry in Nigeria today, even a blind man would be able to see and feel the impressive fast growth and development in the availability, accessibility and interestingly, affordability of telecommunications services and facilities in the past 10 years.
Itanyi who was represented by the Director, Policy, Competition and Economic Analysis, Mrs. Loila Emakpore, said the telecoms sector has witnessed a phenomenal growth from 450,000 lines, about a decade ago, to over 80 million presently.
He regretted however that the growths have come with them, certain negative experiences and draw backs, especially the degraded quality of service disaffection.
Itanyi said: "We at the commission are very aware of some of the major operational challenges facing the industry operatives from the various levels of government and the society generally, such as multiple taxation, resistance to erecting of masts and towers, issues of right of way, inadequate publicly assessed infrastructure like power, fibre optic facilities and other such backbone infrastructure, and roads. "However, it should be clearly stated that the network operatives have in most cases come very short of expectations in terms of network optimization as well as proper utilization of transmission facilities and other such signaling elements," he said.
